When Naima eventually caved in to the pressure and applied for Top Model,she was surprised to make the cut-and even more so when she became one of the final 12 contestants.But over the weeks her confidence grew until she finally saw what everyone had been telling her for years:She is attractive young woman. The penny dropped after a photo shoot that involved her being lowered in a coffin into a freshly dug grave to portray the deadly sin of envy.Naima recalls,"When I saw the picture,I felt beautiful. The experience of finding myself and my value as a beautiful human being changed my life."Lake of confidence is no longer an issue for the 21-year-old. "I now believe in myself.I know I won because of who I am.I'm kind,creative,compassionate,eager and strong-willed.And I don't mean to sound arrogant but I am becoming the world's favourite Top Model.It feels absolutely amazing to have such a global impact on my generation." This self-belief is helping her in the real world of modelling ,where Naima's career is blossoming. As well as contracts with Ford Models and Cover Girl cosmetics, she is also taking lessons for TV guest appearances and an upcoming movie role.And she has plans to become an author."Sometime soon I'll release a book about my experiences as a Top Model- it's been one crazy ride." One crazy moment that sticks in Naima's mind is when fellow Top Model contestant Michelle contracted impetigo,which made her face break out in nasty sores and caused some of the other models to believe she had a flesh-eating virus.Naima remembers,"I thought the other girls were letting things get way out of hand.Had she had anything serious,I'm sure we all would have caught it very soon because we lived,ate and slept together." Another memorable event was when Tyra Banks,the show's supermodel host,exploded at a contestant because she laughed after being eliminated."Tyra was disappointed Tiffany didn't feel she deserved more. Tyra is very much how I imagined her-she's kind, determined,headstrong and focused." Another"sweetie"Naima befriended was judge Janice Dickinson."I call her a lot for emotional support and modelling advice.She always makes me laugh and cheers me up."Naima also counts fellow contestants Kahlen and Brittany among her new best friends,as well as former winner Eva Pigford. But,for Naima,even better than the newfound friendships is the travel.The show's sojourn in South Africa was definitely her favourite trip."The most amazing part was opening the door to Nelson Mandela's former prison cell.Exploring a new country is always exciting.Hopefully I'll make it to New Zealand soon- Whale Rider is my favourite movie and from what I've seen,it's a beautiful place to lose yourself in." Naima's advice for any aspiring Kiwi models:"Follow your dream and have a lot of integrity.Modelling is a lot harder than it looks.There's a lot of pressure and you can't take things personally.I've been told to lose weight a few times amd I try to work out more.But I know who I am-and that ain't a size zero!" ‧结束‧ --
