According to your posts, there are academic journals.
In my fields(economics), there are two kinds of "editors".
One is the people whose names listed on the "editor board".
And they have "ABSOLUTE" power--they can want whatever they like,
including the veto right. The refree only can "suggest" the editors
to accept your paper, editors are the KING/QUEEN of the journal.
The other is the one who do all the format work, usually
we call them editorial assistant. From the title you can see
they have "NO" power.
In many cases(jpe, aer...many many good journals), they are
secetaries. The editorial assistant sometimes is a part-time job.
So, may I ask, which one were you arguing about?
