I'm not sure what you're talking about, but if i'm right,
this is exactly why Boltzmann blew his head off by a shotgun.
Ok, maybe this is an example in math instead of physics,
but Andrew Wiles worked 8 years for his famous proof, even his colleagues
thought he had totally given up on reasearch. Then, boom.
The problem about devoting to science research is clear:
YOU WON'T MAKE BIG MONEY OUT OF IT.
Most of the time, neither MONEY nor FAME.
But if you like it, why not?
You can't always assume that you will strike a balance
between your interest and the reality of life.
