In the free-agent bargaining period before the 2004-05 season, Mr. Colangelo signed point guard Steve Nash to an offer sheet. When he was a free agent at the end of the season, he got a $70 million offer sheet from the Atlanta Hawks. The Suns wanted to keep him, but not at that price. Instead they traded him to Atlanta for Boris Diaw and two first-round draft picks. Mr. Diaw was the league's Most Improved Player this season and -- even better -- his numbers (13.3 points/6.9 rebounds/6.2 assists) came at a fraction of Mr. Johnson's cost. Almost as big as the one that Tim Thomas was in when he got cut by the Chicago Bulls after playing only three games with the team. So when the Suns called him, he was ready. In his first full year in Phoenix, Mr. D'Antoni won 62 games and captured NBA Coach of the Year honors. And he led this season's injury-riddled team to a 54-28 record. In fact, if Mr. D'Antoni and the Suns don't beat the Mavericks, blame it on those injuries. But note that all it really took were a few enlightened moves to get the Suns to the NBA's Final Four.
