'City till I die' - Noel Gallagher
Sunday 11 May 2003
“They’ve got Mick Hucknall, I support Manchester City…Need I say
more?.... I would rather kick my daughter out of the house then let
her go and support Manchester United.” - Noel Gallagher on Football
Focus
Everyone knows Noel Gallagher and 'our kid' Liam are massive City
fans. Like thousands of young lads, they stood on the Kippax and have
lived through the crushing disappointments and champagne supernova
moments of being a Blue.
Noel gave an exclusive interview to Football Focus on Manchester City
leaving Maine Road.
On the difference between City and United:
"They’ve got Mick Hucknall. I support City. Need I say anymore! Any
City fan that has got a child, I would rather kick my daughter out
of the house than let her go and support Arsenal or Manchester United.
She is going to be a City supporter if she likes football. Actually
if she does not like football she’ll probably be a United fan.”
On Kevin Keegan:
“From the minute he began coaching the team we became a better team.
He had virtually the same team as Joe Royle and then all of a sudden
it was like watching Brazil, to coin a phrase. I got talking to him
and he made me feel that I could play for City.”
On Man City’s final game at Maine Road:
"Oasis were asked to perform after the final game: “I’m not going
to go because they are trying to get me on the pitch to do some
embarrassing miming to some Oasis song. Once the game is finished,
they are going to wheel out a stage and all these people are going to
perform on the pitch. To which I say to you ‘how are you going to get
35,000 people off the pitch who are trying to take the pitch home?”
On Maine Road:
‘The young kids that support City now - that we should be thankful
for, considering that it would be easy to support Man Utd as a six year
old. They need a shiny new stadium and we’ve got to move on. I was
originally disappointed when they decided to leave, but we’ve got to
move on. Its going to be great and the new stadium is fantastic.”
“It was always a dream to play at Maine Road. If only to make Bonehead
play there because he hates Man City - he’s a red. To make him walk
out on that pitch in front of 30,000 Oasis fans - which is incidentally
why he left the group.”
