PHILADELPHIA, March 19, 2008 -- Outside of the Wachovia Center there’s a
statue of Sixers great Wilt Chamberlain and on the base of it, chiseled in
bronze, is the quote:
“The true measure of a man is the size of his heart.”
When the Big Dipper uttered those sentiments, he assuredly wasn’t talking
about Allen Iverson.
Chamberlain passed away weeks before the start of the 1999-2000 NBA season,
back when Iverson was just a young player with potential, instead of the
probable Hall of Famer he is today.
But take the time to mull the quote around in your head for a minute and you’
ll realize there is no man those words can be more aptly applied to than
Allen Ezail Iverson.
(Allen Ezail Iverson)
(Yes, “Ezail” really is his middle name, no wonder he makes a little man
scoring amongst the giants look so E-Z.)
Remember Iverson’s early days in Philly? Before Dwyane Wade fell down seven
and got up eight, A.I. fell down 7,000 and got up 8,001. Before his teammate
Carmelo Anthony had the corn rows, head band and sleeve on his left arm, A.I.
had the corn rows, head band and sleeve on his right arm. Before LeBron was
the King, A.I. was the Answer.
(fall down 7, get up 8)
AI早已是一个不会被轻易击倒的战士;
(fall down 7000, get up 8001)
这些早已是AI的基本配备了;
People always tried to qualify and quantify A.I. The shortest MVP in league
history … the third highest scoring average in league history, the owner of
four scoring titles, the seven All-Star bids in 10 seasons as a 76er.
But none of those numbers, no matter how staggering or mind-bending they may
have been, did any justice to Iverson.
Well, maybe one number did, actually: 65 seconds. As in how long the
cacophony of raucous cheering poured down on Iverson lasted after he was the
first player introduced on the visiting team on Wednesday - a full one minute
and five seconds.
As the Philadelphia P.A. announcer started to bellow, “From Georgetown
University…” Iverson bounced off of the Nuggets bench, threw two kisses,
pounded his chest and then moved his cupped hand to his ear, causing the
pitch of the crowd to reach the loudest level it’s been in the building
since playoff runs of yesteryear.
http://0rz.tw/8a3Ke )
The signature hand-to-ear move not only brought the crowd to hysterics, but
gave Iverson’s ovation the extra push it needed to max out at 65 seconds and
eclipse the 42 second love fest that Charles Barkley’s first return as a
Phoenix Sun inspired.
“Don’t feel like nothing’s changed, honestly,” Iverson said.
Well, not exactly nothing. What about being in the visitor’s locker room?
“That’s different. That’s a locker room that I never wanted to end up in.
But it is what it is.”
A couple other things changed, too. After unleashing his crossover on Willie
Green in the third quarter, Iverson put up an airball. Philly fans aren’t
used to seeing that. Also, Ann Iverson was in the crowd wearing the Nuggets
blue and gold instead of the Sixers white and red. Philly fans definitely aren
’t used to seeing that.
Even if the Sixers already had an official bunny rabbit mascot named Hip-Hop,
Ann Iverson was looked to by Philly fans just as much during the Iverson era
to ignite the masses as the hoopin’ hare.
Ann Iverson
Hip-Hop
http://0rz.tw/ac3Rn )
But it’s not his on-the-court exploits that have changed so much as his
off-the-court antics, or lack thereof.
“I’m 32-years old, man. I don’t make mistakes and do some of the things I
was used to doing. I don’t want to be that person anymore.”
But make no mistake about it, “that person” is still loved in Philadelphia.
Iverson said that he still gets approached by fans toting his 76ers No. 3
jersey around the world and still gladly signs them, “What am I supposed to
do?” he joked.
The cheers subsided and there was a game to play between A.I.’s current team
12-games over .500 and out of the postseason standings in the West against
his former squad, a game under .500 and holding the East’s seventh seed. Go
figure.
金块目前超过五成胜率12场, 却还在西区季後赛名单之外;
And what was this? Iverson’s first play of the game when it looked like he
had a step on his defender towards the hoop? A dump off assist to Carmelo
Anthony for an open three in the corner.
Maybe this was a different Allen Iverson.
His first basket of the night was a lot like the thousands of ones he made in
a Sixers uniform from 1996-2006, a pull-up fadeaway from the foul line that’
s supposed to be impossible for a 6-footer to get off in an NBA game, but
Iverson made it look routine.
At one point in the second quarter Iverson finished a lay-up on the fast
break and a couple fans sitting on the lower level got up and started bowing
in the four-time scoring champ’s direction. Philadelphia; where a 165-pound
man is bowed down to like a God happens.
(Philadephia; where a 165-pound man is bowed down to like a God happens.)
Eventually the game became about two teams making sure they take care of
business in March so that they’ll be still be part of the fun come playoff
time in late April.
Philly fans’ unbridled love started to wear off in the fourth quarter with
the Sixers up by eight and Iverson going to the line. They booed him, as if
to say, “Hey, no offense A.I., but you know all we’ve ever wanted is a
winner. Nothing personal.”
There were moments of vintage Iverson down the stretch. After being called
for a blocking foul and giving up a three-point play to Andre Miller, the
player he was traded for last year, Iverson came down and stuck a three from
the wing with a minute remaining to tie it.
The following play was just as spectacular, with Andre Iguodala falling to
the ground and seemingly losing control of the ball only to find Sam
Dalembert for the impromptu go-ahead alley-oop with :32.9 remaining.
The Nuggets had the ball and trailed by two points for the game's last
possession when Iverson got the shot everybody paid to see, a pull-up jumper
from the left wing. But it went long. The Nuggets had a couple feeble
attempts in the final scrum to tie it up, but the Sixers held on for the
115-113 win .
Despite the loss, Iverson got everything he could have possibly asked for. He
scored 32 points, dropped eight assists, had a chance to be the hero and even
though he didn’t make the big shot, still walked away with a hero’s
welcome.
“I dreamed in up a certain way, and it was better than that,” Iverson said.
“It made me feel appreciated. It made me feel like the time that I was here
was worthwhile.”
Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks, who only became the franchise patriarch in the
first place in part due to Iverson’s insistence, spoke to the media about
what happened between him and A.I.
“It ended,” the former coach/mentor/buddy said. “Unfortunately it ended in
a way neither of us wanted.”
Not only did their relationship as player and coach end. But their
relationship as person and person was over too.
Iverson and Cheeks didn’t speak at all in the 15 months since he was traded
to the Rockies (as in the area, not the baseball team).
But when Iverson made his entrance tonight, he made sure he covered all his
bases. He shook hands with the security guards, slapped five with the ball
boys, hugged his former coach and even kissed the emblem of his former team
at center court. Heck, he probably flushed his favorite urinal in the
building too, just to let it know he was back.
“If I would have done thinks different, maybe I’d still be seeing those
people.”
But if he did things differently, would be even be Allen Iverson?
Allen Iverson is real people.
Allen Iverson is three parts hustle, one part lazy.
Two parts selfish, two parts sharing.
Six parts star, four parts regular dude from Newport News.
Four parts nice, one part nasty.
One part Nugget, one part Sixer.
But he’s 10 parts heart and that, after all, is the true measure of a man.
