The Yanks need to improve their starting pitching depth, and they need a centerfielder and a first baseman. That's it. They don't need to ship out Cano. They don't need to ship out Hughes. They don't even need Matt Holliday. Meanwhile, it appears the blogosphere is split over Brian Cashman's re-signing. We understand the attitude of looking back to 2000 and wondering how Cashman can get such an endorsement when all that's happened is payroll up and winning down. But moves like Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, and Kei Igawa were not made when B-Cash was supposedly fully in charge. You know what moves were made with him in charge? Jettisoning Gary Sheffield, filling a gaping hole in the lineup with Xavier Nady, and nabbing a potentially very good lefty for the 'pen. But despite when many are saying, Phil Hughes may yet be a superstar, Ian Kennedy may yet be effective, and the farm system is waiting to burst with Phil Coke, Austin Jackson, Mark Melancon, Jeff Marquez, Alan Horne, Andrew Brackman, and Jesus Montero. That's eight legit minor leaguers who could contribute to the team as soon as next year. That was not possible several seasons ago.
