But Chamberlain's cult-hero status at Yankee Stadium has not affected his pitching. The Yankees' radar gun clocked three of Chamberlain's fastballs at 100 mph last night as he worked the final inning against the Detroit Tigers. Although the score was 6-1, and using Chamberlain last night means he cannot be used today because of the rules the Yankees have in place, manager Joe Torre wanted to bring in Chamberlain because he had not pitched since Monday. "I'm not going to anoint him after one inning," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said, "but he's pretty impressive. "He's obviously blessed with a great arm and what looked like a nasty breaking ball. I ran into him at a clothing store the other day and got a chance to meet him, so I was looking forward to seeing him pitch." Chamberlain has started his career with six scoreless innings, with two hits allowed and nine strikeouts. The fans have taken to chanting "Job-ah, Job-ah." "It looks like it pumps him up," Torre said. "But when you talk to him, you look in his eyes and you don't see that excited feeling. "It's somebody older than a 21-year-old. ... He just comes in like he's going to take care of business and he seems very relaxed with that." Catcher Jorge Posada said Chamberlain is enjoying the excitement surrounding him but keeping himself under control. "It's great," Chamberlain said. "It's something you can't describe. There were a lot of people here going crazy. That makes you feel good, you use that energy to the best. Sometimes you let it get the most of you, you try to do too much. But I've done a good job of slowing the game down and getting used to the role." Johnny Damon, who played center field for the first time since July 23, conceded that the job belongs to Melky Cabrera. With two years remaining on Damon's contract after this season, at $13 million per year, the Yankees -- who tried to gauge other teams' interest in Damon in late July -- will have to figure out what to do with him. And Damon, who turns 34 in November, knows it. "It's definitely something I'll be thinking about," Damon said. "We'll just have to wait and see. I think they can pretty much pencil in Melky as the everyday center fielder for a number of years." For now, though, Damon says he can deal with his part-time role. "There was a day not too long ago," he said, "where you show up to the ballpark, you know you're leading off playing center. Now it's different, but you have to adjust for the team aspect of it." Damon's nine-year streak of starting at least 140 games will come to an end. Last night was just his 90th start in the Yankees' 122 games. "(The rest of the season) is going to be pretty interesting," Damon said. "We'll just have to keep mixing it in and keep thinking team first. "If we finish up strong and make the playoffs, then it's definitely worth it." Hideki Matsui has a 12-game hitting streak. ... Infielder Chris Basak, designated for assignment Wednesday when the Yankees signed top draft pick Andrew Brackman to a major-league contract, was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins. Basak, who had been with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, was assigned to Minnesota's Triple-A affiliate in Rochester, N.Y. Shelley Duncan, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is just the third player ever to hit his first six major-league homers at Yankee Stadium.
