1. Describe the basic situation underlying Linda Brewer's short short story
"20/20"─ i.e., why Bill and Ruthie are driving together, where do they
possibly start and obvious head toward; and identify, in terms of plot,
the conflict and resolution of the story. (10%)
2. Describe the action that happens before and during the following paragraph
that is obviously implied in it: (5%)
As they leaned there a girlish voice echoed up gaily from the stairs
leading to the court below. "Well, come along, then," it cried, not
to them but to an invisible companion, "and let's leave the young
things to their knitting" ; and a voice as fresh laughed back: "Oh,
look here, Babs, not actually knitting─"Well, I mean figuratively,"
rejoined the first. "After all, we haven't left our poor parents much
else to do..." and at that point the turn of the stairs engulfed the

6. Why does "The Stroy of an Hour" choose to describe Mrs. Mallard remembering
her husband's face as "that had never looked save with love upon her" and
how is this related to the climax of the story? (5%)
7. Summarize the plot of William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" in the order of
its appearance in the story and explain how the arrangement of the plot is
determined by the story's narrator and point of view. (10%)
8. Analyze and compare the point of view (including its central consciousness)
employed in Ann Beattie's "Janus" and Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White
Elephants." (5%)
9. Explain the symbolic significance of the setting either in (1) "Roman Fever
" and "The Story of an Hour"; or (2) Hemingway's "Hills Like White
Elephants." (Note: choose one to answer, not both; 5%)
10. What is the conflictunderlying "Hill Like White Elephants," how do its two
characters react to it, and how do their different reactions influence
their relationship? (10%)
11. Summarize the possible stories that happen to "you" in Lorrie Moore's"How"
and describe what kind of person "you" are. (10%)
12. (1) Identify the narrator of Doris Lessing's story "Our Friend Judith" and
explain the effect of choosing such a narrator on the story that is told.
(2)As the images of Judith accumulate throughout the narrative of Doris
Lessing "Our Friend Judith",how does our impression of her change?
Is she a flat or a round character and why? (10%)
13. Summarize the story of Andrea's "relationship" with the bowl and explain
what it could possibly mean for her. (10%)
