PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - The legendary career of Temple coach
John Chaney has come to an end.
Without using the word "retirement" at an 11 a.m. news conference
on Monday, the 74-year-old Hall of Famer stepped down doing what
he likes to do best - recounting countless stories about education
and its role with helping the poor.
"Coach John Chaney's basketball achievements are legendary," Temple
president David Adamany said. "In two dozen years at Temple, Coach
Chaney did not always have the strongest recruiting classes, but he
always got the most out of his players, on and off the court.

Chaney started his college coaching career at Cheyney State in 1972,
winning a Division II national title in 1978 before heading to Temple
in 1982. He guided the Owls to eight Atlantic 10 Conference regular-
season titles and six tournament crowns.
Although he never went to the Final Four, Chaney coached in five
regional finals among 17 NCAA Tournament bids.

In 34 years, Chaney posted a 741-301 record, including a 516-252
mark in 24 years at Temple. The Owls posted a 17-14 record this
season, including an 8-8 conference record.
Chaney ranks 13th all-time in wins and was fifth among active coaches,
behind Bob Knight, Eddie Sutton, Lute Olson and Mike Krzyzewski. He
was national coach of the year twice and A-10 coach of the year five
times, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.
