Undeniably, he’ll be valuable as an NBA player because he’s an elite shot creator with physicality and the handle to separate from opponents. His shooting improved drastically this season, which allowed him to be efficient enough despite his propensity for shots from the midrange. I’m not sure I’ve ever evaluated a more polished offensive guard as a teenager. His balance, footwork, shooting ability and passing acumen were superb. The problem Acuff might run into is that this player archetype is not all that valued in the NBA right now. Trae Young, who was drastically better than Acuff as a freshman at Oklahoma and made an All-NBA team, got traded this season in what was essentially a salary-cap dump. More than ever, smaller, ball-dominant guards are not seen as useful unless they are at the apex of the league, like Jalen Brunson or Tyrese Maxey. In that vein, Acuff has a narrow pathway toward success at the highest levels of the NBA. Loves to rip through and drive to his left — but also can cross to his left before going back to his right quickly. Great control over the ball and can string together multiple moves if required. If he gets the ball out on the break, he’s attacking and trying to get downhill. Given the overall percentages, I’m not sure he’ll ever be an elite finisher. Also had some good moments when he would manipulate defenders with his eyes before turning to hit his teammate. Also isn’t diligent in recovery. Will give up on too many plays because he’s too far behind. Rarely seems to stay attached to the play after a screen. On those drives, Acuff’s decision-making on whether to shoot or pass can get funky. Will often take some rough touch shots inside of 8 feet. Shows some flashes out of ball screens to make cross-corner kickouts and read the low man, as mentioned above. Was this a great shooting season or genuine development? Could also sometimes overdrive in transition and go one-on-three to try to score instead of making the more prudent decision to bring out the ball. Everything he does seems to be in the name of aggressiveness, which is good.
