I don’t see him as a Nikola Jokic level processor of the game, and his lack of size compared to the Serbian star is an issue. You know what you’re getting every night. The biggest reason for that is his feel for the game. That allows him to consistently make plays and get into dangerous spots on the court. Beyond that, his versatility is his best weapon. He makes it easy on his teammates. Absorbs contact well but also initiates contact with his shoulders to create separation. Has little mini-hook shots over either shoulder. Very soft touch. Excellent as a short-roller because of his comfort with the ball and ability to pull up in that area with floaters or jumpers. Can also pass. He’ll also roll to the rim if he sees an opening. People made a similar case about Paolo Banchero when he was entering college, but Banchero was bigger, had more athletic fluidity and wasn’t quite as stiff as Boozer can be movement-wise from time to time. They ’re totally different players. Anything that Boozer could add in terms of agility and explosiveness would be a massive help. He’s much more skilled than just a pure bully-ball type of guy, but he may not consistently separate from his man. But the red flags were there this year, as it was his worst season as a finisher. He is a below-the-rim finisher in general. As he moves up levels, this could cause issues as he faces bigger, stronger opponents who won’t be driven backward as consistently as they were by his shoulders in high school. Has enough touch, balance and coordination through contact that this should work itself out, but it’s worth bringing up in terms of translation. It doesn’t look fluid. The ball goes in when he gets it off because he has tremendous touch, but I wonder if he can always get the ball and get into the shot. Has a slower ball pick-up and then kind of brings the ball to the left for a split-second before it gets into his middle-aligned shooting pocket. Only took about 2-1/2 half-court pull-up attempts per game in high school and then only one per game in college. He’s clearly a guy who can take advantage of mismatches. If he gets a wing or a smaller guard on him, he can post up. He may be able to make it work against bigs. But most of the advantages he creates will likely come through either interactions on screens with teammates, or through pure strength.
