Chelsea have made a British record ￡32m bid for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, say newspaper reports. The offer would eclipse the ￡29.1m Manchester United paid to Leeds for Rio Ferdinand in 2002. Liverpool are reported to have responded by offering the midfielder a two-year contract extension to 2009 on ￡100,000 a week. The 25-year-old is thinking over the proposal made after meetings with club representatives on Monday. Manager Rafael Benitez earlier told a news conference he wanted the midfielder to stay for the rest of his career and also said the player should become Liverpool's next manager. Real Madrid are also waiting in the wings with director of football Arrigo Sacchi denying his club had made a deal with Chelsea to keep the price down. "Of course we are interested in him, what big club isn't?" Sacchi told The Sun newspaper. "We have no agreement with Chelsea. How could we when our clubs are always interested in the same players?" Liverpool open their defence of the Champions League crown with a qualifier against Welsh side TNS on 13 July. If he plays in that match he would be ineligible to turn out for any other side in the competition. --
