He completed a ￡6.3million move and signed a three- and-a-half year contract. Born in Caceres, Spain, Morientes is a traditional striker who started out with Albecete. He was picked up by Real Zaragoza in 1995 and really made a name for himself. It wasn't long before he had forged a reputation as one of Spain's best young strikers, and so after two seasons with Zaragoza, 28 goals and 57 games, Morientes signed for Real Madrid. He struggled to break into the first team and was loaned to Monaco for the 2003/04 season where he was a huge success. He scored nine goals in 12 games during their astonishing Champions League campaign, while netted 10 goals in 28 Le Championnat appearances. He is an established Spanish international who featured for his country at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, although was a shock omission from the 2000 European Championships.
