Flop: – exaggerate contact to draw a foul –

This is nothing new in the NBA, flopping has been a problem in the NBA for
decades but it’s never been an epidemic. In the 80’s and 90’ very few high
profile players flopped so it was not all that visible to the casual fans.
You never saw guys like Jordan, Magic, Bird, Barkley, DR. J, Moses Malone and
other big name stars of the league flop.
M. Malone
However, in today’s NBA the stars of the game seem to be the best floppers
and to make matters worse the refs rewards them every time with calls and
sometimes players are ejected based on some really bad acting job.
The flopping in today’s game is so bad that it makes the games so hard to
watch, every little contact in the games creates a chain reaction with
players falling over like they have just been knocked down by an 18 wheeler.
The best series of the 2012 playoffs so far has been the LA Clippers and
Memphis Grizzlies, especially game 7 when the refs really let the 10 players
on the court decide the outcome of the game.
In every other series thus far including the San Antonio Spurs and the
Oklahoma City Thunder series were both teams were completely superior to
their opponents in the first round, the refs thought it best to still help
the Spurs and the OKC Thunder guarantee a favorable outcome to the games.
So the question really here is; who really is to blame for the sorry state of
affairs of flopping in the NBA today?

I have suggested the Refs, but are they the solely responsible for this out
of control trend in the league?
Or do the he players have a big role to play here?
How about the NBA? Moreover, they make all the rules of the game.
Depending on who you ask the answer will be different and that is the reason
flopping in the NBA is such an epidemic. Because, just like the any other
epidemic in the world today – the answer to the question; who is to blame
and how do we fix the problem are never readily available.
Stephen Curry on an interview with Dan Patrick on the Dan Patrick Show on
Monday May 14th said that during his rookie season with the warriors the
coaching staff use to lay mats on the court during practice and taught the
rookies how to sell fouls.
That might have been shocking all by itself to hear the coaching staff of an
NBA team are teaching a class on flopping. But the shocking part of this
revelation came when he was asked who use to head the class, Curry said those
classes were led by the then head Coach Don Nelson.
So, who is to blame here?
Apparently the Refs, NBA teams are now forced to teach players how to flop so
they can get an edge on the court because the refs will blow the whistle
every time someone flops.
Pacers head Coach Frank Vogel goes further and blames both the players and
the refs. Shortly before the Indiana Pacers were to take on the Miami Heat in
the 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals game 1, Pacers head coach criticized
his opponents for alleged flopping:
“They are the biggest flopping team in the NBA. It’ll be very interesting
(to see) how the referees officiate the series and how much flopping they
reward… Every drive to the basket, they have guys not making a play on the
ball, but sliding in front of drivers. Oftentimes they’re falling down even
before contact is even being made. It’ll be interesting to see how the
series is officiated.”
He couldn’t be more accurate, aside from Dwayne Wade (who too is a flopper
but not as rampant as his teammates) every player on that heats team is a
master flopper. However the NBA did not appreciate his honesty; Vogel was
fined $15,000 by the league for those remarks.
他说的一点也没错,除了 D. Wade(虽说他也会假摔,但不像他的队友这麽猖獗)
So, who does the league believe is to blame for the epidemic?
“Some of this is acting,” NBA Commissioner David Stern said on an interview
with ESPN during the Heat – Pacers Eastern Conference game. Before the game
Stern handed LeBron James his third MVP award in four years, Stern continued.
“We should give out Oscars rather than MVP trophies.”
“It’s a legitimate concern,” Stern said. “Some years ago, I told the
competition committee that we were going to start fining people for flopping
and then suspend them—and I think they almost threw me out of the room (and
said), ‘No, let it be.’
“But I think it’s time to look at it a more serious way, because it’s only
designed to fool the referee. It’s not a legitimate play in my judgment.”
Do I believe the commissioner is really concerned about the flopping issue?
Yes I do, in 1997 he helped institute the 4-foot (1.22 meter) “dotted line
area” around the center of the basket to help prevent flops near the basket,
making such flops a blocking fouls or no-calls. But, “I think they almost
threw me out of the room”, really!!! You lost me there commish.
David Stern gets what David Stern wants.
But, could the Big Kahuna be right, are the players mostly responsible for
the current state of flopping in the league and are the refs just been
swindled?
Let’s face it, flopping effectively is not easy to do, primarily because
drawing contact can sometimes result in the opposite effect—a foul called on
the defensive player—when too much contact is drawn or if the player has not
positioned himself perfectly.
The bottom line; the best floppers are just really good at what they do and it
’s really hard to tell in most cases if they are faking or if they have just
be struck with a sledgehammer.
So, who do you think is really responsible for the flopping epidemic?
Speaking of being struck with a sledgehammer, no one did it better than Vlade
Divac, he earned a reputation as a premier flopper and is often found at the
top of lists ranking the greatest floppers in NBA history. Even one of Divac's
own countrymen and former teammates, Peja Stojakovi, referred to him as “the
father of flopping.”
Many would love to credit him with introducing flopping into the NBA (maybe
we should credit him with the current flopping epidemic), but that will be
inaccurate as flopping was very prevalent in the league long before he
arrived in the United States. But none before or after him has done it better.
