A Cuppa With Kit Chan
Homegrown talent Kit Chan spills the beans on her undergarment
collection, flirting and suffering for her art. By Daniel Goh
KIT Chan, as we all know is an Over-Achiever.
Not Content with being a star in Taiwan, Hongkong, Malaysia
and at home, this LaSalle grad has also starred in a hit musical
with Heavenly King Jackie Cheung.
Add to that list global travel, charity work, a book of poetry,
a frockshop called "Flowers in the Attic". a TVB serial and a
perfect press record.
And that's just what the public knows. In private, Kit Chan reads
voraciously, attends fashion shows and collects lingerie, among other
eccentricities. Give this fantastic conversationalist a cup of coffie,
click'Play' and switch to Kit Chan's other mode.
8 Days: Kit dear, are you Singapore's undisputed Undergament Queen?
Kit: Ooo, I love underwear and I've many, many drawers full of them...
I'vecute ones, sexy ones, feminine ones! I love corsets... and
thongs... but those are not so comfortable, lor. I also adore
garter betls and buy them even though I hardly wear them - it's the
notion, mah! People think garters are invoncenient. Wrong! Pantyhose
is even more inconvenient. When you go to the toilet, you don't have
to roll down your pantyhose if you're wearing garters!
8 Days: So were you wearing garters when you fainted in Africa and the
paramedics found you?
Kit: No lah! I was in Ethiopia in August as a World Vision Youth
Ambassador when I fainted! I'm not that prone to fainting, lah! I
was already working very, very hard and then we went to Ethipia -
my hosts wanted me to try their traditional wine. I can't drink
when I'm tired, so I only drank like three sips. The wine was made
from rice dregs and honey, very exotic. I felt like 'uuurrr...
better stop'. After the meal, we went to this shop and I think the
air wasn't very good. I was bargaining for a $50 national costume,
and suddenly I said '... wait wait wait, I think I'm going to faint!'
They all laughed because they thought I was fainting over $50. Then
the money dropped to the floor and so did I! THe next thing I
remember was all that hong yew (medicated oil) on my temples!
8 Days: No handsome Ethiopian paramedics?
Kit: No, just friends lah. This is my second year as a World Vision
ambassador and it's great! They wanted an artiste and I've
approached them. I've done a concert and the trip. This month, we
went to Phnom Penh. I feel that many charities already get a lot
of publicity so I want to create awareness for World Vision.
8 Days: You travel a lot on your own time too, don't you? I bumped into
you in Ho Chi Minh in 1996!
Kit; I've to travel at least twice a year or I'll go crazy! You know,
Hongkong artistes can go for five years without a break. They
cannot bear to give up one single opportunity to make money. They
just can't! I really like the feeling when you travel and meet
someone, and it's not even a romance - you meet this guy, have a
cup of cooffee, talk, and there's this flirting thing going on and
that's great. Nowadays, people equate flirting with you wanting to
go to be dwith them. Well, that's not the point at all! That's why
I like watching period Hollywood movies - the characters flirt in
subtle ways... just the eyes, or whatever. [Sigh.] It's a lost art.
8Days: So is there someone special since you became single a year ago?
Kit: There have been admirers but I haven't met the right person yet. I
haven't dated in a year! Before that, I was attached to two persons
over a period of seven years. I'd one year off and I completed so
many things in that one year. I realised that pak tor (dating) takes
up a lot of time! Sometimes, mere flirtation satisfies that part of
me that wants romance. And I have a lot of friends, so I'm fine.
8 Days: You have been working non-stop, haven't you?
Kit: Yes, I've been overworked in the past two years... I chose to act
in the TVB serial Healing Hands 2 because of the timing, budget,
script and cast. Also I felt my character allowed me to finally
have some fun! You know, all my songs are ballads and even my
character in Snow.Wolf.Lake was demure and stoic. I was getting
bored playing damsels - this one smokes, drinks and gets angry!
8 Days: Is it tough making a name for yourself away from home?
Kit: Singaporean artistes really have to work doubly hard to get
respect. The Hongkong media is so hard! The reporters actually
protect the artistes... and they only write good things! So a
Hongkong star could be a total brat and the local audience will
never know!
8 Days: So what's up in 2001?
Kit: Well, you know I've a shop at The Heeren. I sit there and look,
and I can't believe I've such a gorgeous shop! It's my dream come
true. I'll also be moving into my own place in Bukit Timah. My
cupboards are bursting, so Mummy's very glad I'm moving out. Well,
I'm a big girl now and I should have my own place. It would be
interesting.
8 Days: You'd have to take better care of yourself then, like not
drinking when you're tired.
Kit: I enjoy wine and liquor but not beer, I don't have much capacity
for alcohol... I luuurvvve coffee! It's a whole lifestle thing
for me. Coffee is a mood enhancer, one of life's little luxuries,
like good soap or moisturiser. It's not overly decadent so that's
good. You know, I drank my first cup of cappuccino at 15, while
in Perth for a geography field trip. Our teacher asked: 'Girls!
Do you know what cuppuccino is? It's a kind of coffee folks in
Perth drink!' We were like, 'Ooohhh....!'
