标题:Iran, EU working toward fresh talks
26/08/2008 11:00:00 PM GMT
Iran is working with the EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana in planning a
further round of talks on the country's nuclear program.
Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told reporters on Tuesday that the
main issue at present is how to initiate a fresh round of talks with the five
permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany.
Mottaki said that the resumption of talks was put forward during the Geneva
talks despite attempts to hinder further negotiations. Mottaki was referring
to US efforts to create a tense atmosphere for Iran by setting a unilateral
deadline and resorting to war rhetoric.
He also noted that the common points offered in the West's package of
incentives and Iran's proposals could provide the groundwork for the next
round of talks.
On July 19, in Geneva, Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili sat at the
negotiating table with the EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana and
representatives of the 5+1 Group.
This was the first time that the talks took place with a US diplomat present,
namely William Burns. The talks were aimed at studying Iran's proposals and
the West's package of incentives.
In a unilateral action following the Geneva talks, the US set a two-week
deadline for Iran to respond to the West's package or face further sanctions.
The package included incentives for Iran in return for suspension of its
uranium enrichment. Iran however rejected the deadline.
Mottaki meanwhile continued that Iran's response to the West's proposals was
not on the agenda at present and added that the West's clear response to
Iran's package could pave the way for Tehran's transparent response.
He also added that as a good will gesture Iran is ready to cooperate with the
IAEA on the issue of the 'alleged studies' of weaponization attributed to
Iran by the US.
The West accuses Iran, a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
(NPT) of following a secret military program.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which has been conducting
extensive inspections on Iranian nuclear sites has confirmed the country's
non-diversion toward nuclear weapons program.
