There will be four trophy holders of this event from the previous years in the draw. Justine's return to Indian Wells has her seeded once again at #1 in California. She received a bye for the first round, and her opening match will be a second round with Pironkova or Ruano-Pascal. Justine seeded #1 is in the top half of the draw with #4 seed Elena Dementieva. The bottom half stars #2 seed Lindsay Davenport, and #3 seed Maria Sharapova. Justine could face an opening match with the surprise victor over Venus Williams at the Australian Open, youngster Tsvetana Pironkova ranked #76. The 18 year old Bulgarian maybe new territory for Justine; they have never played each other. The semi-finals could be another rousing match with Elena Dementieva, but the #4 seed must work her way through a tough array of rising rookies Ivanovic, Kirilenko, Chakvetadze, and Mirza. The highlight of the bottom half of the draw, anchored by Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport, is the potential match of the Californian #2 seed, and Martina Hingis in the 4th round.
