Late chances The point was enough for the Bundesliga outfit to guarantee one of the top two places in Group B, but they could have taken all three had Roy Makaay accepted one of the chances that came his way. The best arrived with 17 minutes remaining after Roque Santa Cruz sent him clear with a raking long ball, yet with only Ricardo to beat, he blazed over. It set up a tense finale. Joao Moutinho rattled the crossbar with a free-kick but Sporting could not steal the points, meaning they must beat FC Internazionale Milano without the suspended Liedson on Matchday 5 to retain control of their destiny in the competition. Lell opportunity Bastian Schweinsteiger's strike was all that separated the teams when they met in Lisbon a fortnight ago, and Sporting's hopes would have been high when they were handed their opponents' team-sheet. Felix Magath handed Christian Lell his first Bayern start after a late hip injury ruled out Mark van Bommel. The 22-year-old came in at right-back, with Willy Sagnol joining Andreas Ottl and Hasan Salihamidzic in a makeshift three-man midfield - any nerves he may have felt were quickly dispelled with an exquisite tackle on Yannick Djalo. Sagnol creativity Sagnol too quickly settled into his new role, threading a disguised pass to Makaay who dragged his fizzing effort just wide of the upright. But it was not all the home side as Sporting's sprightly attacking duo of Liedson and Yannick, supported by the guile of Carlos Martins, began to ask questions. Within two minutes of Makaay's opportunity, Liedson was presented with an almost identical chance after Philipp Lahm misjudged a long ball, yet he too screwed his shot wide. Makaay threat Santa Cruz and Martins traded long-range efforts before Sporting almost fashioned a real opening just after the half-hour when Rodrigo Tello and Yannick combined but the latter's pass just evaded Liedson's well-timed run. Makaay went alone at the other end, turning into the area and shaping to shoot before Anderson Polga intervened with a fine challenge. The Brazilian defender could do nothing seven minutes before half-time, however, as Makaay found space outside the box and fired a rasping half-volley that did not miss Ricardo's upright by much. Attacking impetus Both teams reshuffled at half-time, with Lell making way as Magath opted for more creativity in the shape of Julio dos Santos, Sagnol reverting to full-back, while Sporting brought on Nani. Pontus Farnerud soon entered the fray as well, although the changes failed to spark an opener as defences held sway - the resolute Ottl was particularly impressive in front of the Bayern back line. Custodio caught the eye in a similar role for the visitors but failed to pick up Makaay's late surge into the area on the hour and the Dutchman brought a rare save out of Ricardo.
