A Tonel goal right at the verge of half time was enough to give Sporting the
edge over Estrela da Amadora (1-0) in the highlight of Sunday's Bwin Liga
action. The result pulls the Leoes back to second place - equal on points with
FC Porto (15) but lagging slightly on goal difference.
Sporting had a tough time in front of plucky, last-placed Estrela da Amadora,
but were fortunate enough to have trained their dead-ball strategies well and
Tonel (45 min) headed in the only goal of the night. Good preparation for the
two next fixtures – Bayern Munich and FC Porto – both at Sporting's Alvalade
home.
Paulo Bento rested some habitual faces given the marathon ahead and the
miniscule threat posed by the rival. Paredes, Bueno, Romagnoli and Ronny all
got a shot at a first team place. The 'stand-ins' didn't get the thumbs up and
Caneira, Custodio & Carlos Martins were brought on in the second half.
