SEATTLE - Brandon Webb's troublesome shoulder will require more tests and maybe even surgery, and the possibility exists that the organization's most accomplished homegrown player has thrown his last pitch for the Diamondbacks. General Manager Josh Byrnes said Webb was sent back to Phoenix and was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Friday to determine whether there is more structurally wrong with his shoulder than Webb and the club initially believed. The original diagnosis was a strained teres major, a muscle outside the shoulder joint, but with Webb continuing to experience stiffness and soreness, more tests are being done to determine whether there are problems with his rotator cuff or labrum. "It's a little bit of a puzzler," Byrnes said. "We have a decent handle structurally on what's in there. . . . These symptoms are related to a muscle outside the joint. They've been persistent, and we haven't been able to resolve them." Webb hasn't pitched since Opening Day, and his status for the remainder of the season is up in the air. "There's some level of concern," Byrnes said, "but until we know, I don't want to predict it." This is believed to be Webb's third MRI this season. He said in May that the second MRI focused specifically on the teres muscle and that he was told his doctors were confident the teres, not the rotator cuff, was the issue. His rotator cuff has been a concern for nearly as long as Webb has been pitching. When he was in high school, he visited a local hospital and was told he had a torn rotator cuff, but a visit to renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews quelled those concerns. Then last season, the Diamondbacks pulled a three-year, $54 million contract extension after multiple insurance companies raised concerns about Webb's shoulder after examining his MRI results. But Webb said he visited Andrews again in December and was told his shoulder had normal wear and tear for a pitcher. Byrnes said Webb's MRI's largely have remained consistent. "The MRI hasn't shown any changes, which is good," he said. "There's not anything that has sort of trended down, so to speak, in the past 12 months." Webb might not get answers immediately. Team physician Dr. Michael Lee is out of town for the weekend, but Byrnes said Lee will review Webb's MRI results early next week. Webb also is likely to seek a second opinion. If he needs a significant surgical procedure, the Diamondbacks will be hesitant to pick up the 2010 option on his contract, which is worth $8.5 million. They instead could buy out the option for $2 million, making Webb a free agent. "Obviously we need to get our medical opinion formed and figure out a course of treatment for him, how it affects next year and beyond," Byrnes said. --
