标题[文法] a lot of接单数可数名词？

大家好，请教一下
There is not much difference between 'a lot of' and 'lots of': they are both
used mainly before singular uncountable and plural nouns, and before pronouns.
(Practical English Usage 3rd edition Point333.2)
PEU说a lot of後接单数不可数名词、复数名词、复数代名词
（pronouns应该指是这个意思吧？）
(更新：我现在觉得pronouns应该是指各种代名词，而非复数代名词)
但我看到以下的句子：
A lot of the play is very funny.
'You'll find that everybody will try and help their colleague.' — 'Yeah.
There's a lot of that.'

这里的'the play', 'that'(我觉得应该用those，表示很多那样的行为),
'it'（我觉得应该用复数的they，表示很多动词都这样）不都是单数可数名词吗？
为何前面能用a lot of呢？

a. 'the play'确实是单数、可数名词。
b. 'that'如果指try and help的「行为」的话，後来我看麦克米伦词典的解释：
'Behaviour' is usually an uncountable noun, so it is rarely used in the plural.
The plural form ‘behaviours’ is a specialized term used in fields such as
psychology, social science, and education. This use is much less common than
the uncountable use.
所以这里确实是不可数没错。
c. 'it'应该是指前面的the tricky part。
网友Tarheel说：
"a lot of the play" means "a large portion of the play" Similarly, "a lot of
our land" means "a large portion of the land".

所以 a lot of 确实可以接单数可数名词，表示那个名词的「很大一部分」？
