标题[文法] 过去完成式

请问各位这几句:
1.It was raining hard, but by the time class [was] over, the rain [had stopped].
为什麽前面的was 不能用had been呢?
後面的had stopped 是雨持续到课程前结束，但前面的课堂不也是"持续"到课程结束吗?
怎麽不能用had been呢?
2.Millions of years ago, dinosaurs [roamed] the earth , but they had became
extinct by the time people first appeared
那段时间不是正在漫游[were roaming]吗?

hadn't recognized也可以吧? (持续到我辨识出他)
