标题[求译] at the margins

原文：In the age of scientific standardization and globalization,
one would hardly expect much variation in the biomedical understanding of AIDS.
And yet, at the margins such differences were felt.
疑问：第二句"at the margins"是什麽意思？
我的译文：在科学标准化与全球化的年代，我们很难想像人们对於爱滋病的生物医学了解
会有多大的差异，也不会想到这种差异会造成什麽严重的後果，然而我们可以在边缘(?)
察觉其影响。
