标题[文法] many of them 主词

请问
Many of them .......... 这里them是主词对吧?? 所以动词要跟them一致
那 many of 是形容词片语吗??
因为想到另外一个例子:
这题没问题，我很确定
A number of students are.....
students是主词所以动词要跟他一致
a number of 是形容词片语
