Fri Nov 19 23:08:40 2010
有一位 director of the drama department 会这样子对他们解释:
Each.
Play
Goes.
On.
A.
Separate.
Line.
"See, it's transcript real estate!
Drama club provides plenty of land in the right district!
2. "It is not loving to expect a child to be good at everything all the time
-- to be
a smooth and sleek academic, a social, artistic, and athletic
machine."
请问 a smooth and sleek academic 是甚麽意思呢?
3. "I belong to a group of school counselors, and over the past ten years the
tales of the
hidden toll, the dark side of teens' striving for perfection,
have become the most common topic of discussion at our meetings."
4. "Our culture has such a narrow definition of success: grades,
gregariousness, ambition, and appearance.
While each of these qualities
can fit onto a longer, deeper,
and more nuanced list of ingredients for a satisfying adult life,
we forget that our children come to us in God's image."
5. "Nowhere does parents' anxiety about their teen's futures come into
sharper relief than in that grand acceptance derby: college admissions."
"
I have to do it for him or it won't get done."
"No, he can't take time off from Model United Nations to join film club.
Everyone knows
film club is code for 'slacker kid'."
而第二句的 film club is code for "slacker kid",又是为什麽呢?
7. "The teens turn away from parents, from the cozy family cocoon you've spent
so much money and energy to create, and form their own protective tribe.
They develop convictions, intentionally unlike yours,
about
the only tolerable food, clothing, books, and music."
请问 they develop convictions about the only tolerable food, clothing...
8. "I didn't remember that you were away. And I didn't notice
the decorations on the chocolates before I ate them."
And this was true:
he didn't and he hadn't.
I didn't... and I didn't...
为什麽最後一句会变成 he didn't and he hadn't 呢?
是因为句子如果变成 he didn't and he didn't,读起来怪怪的吗?
9. "I can't go to school with my hair like this.
I look like
the wrong kind of person."
请问 the wrong kind of person 是甚麽意思?
10. "Fantastic. I would have no idea how to
pull together a CD mix like that."
11. "There was a time when a young person rose when an adult entered the room,
would not consider calling adults by their first names,
and automatically came to the door to
pick up a date."
请问这里的 to pick up a date 是甚麽意思呢?
