标题[请益] 原文书中的斜体字

请问一下，有时候读原文小说或教科书，
常常会有一、两个字，字体不太一样，变成斜体，
是有什麽作用吗？
本来我以为可能是重点，可是看多了，又实在不觉得有重要到哪去，
举一个例子，下面节录一小段原文书中的句子，黄色字体代表斜体字：
We make up rules when we need them, and discard them when we don't.
Then when
do we need them?
又如小说中一段：
I do not need to bend and measure the footprints and pick up the
cigarette ends and examine the bent blades of grass. It is enough
for me to sit back and
think.
为什麽会在do和think要斜体呢？有什麽作用吗？
