想求助高手 可否帮我看下列句子中if的结构

took place over very lengthy time scales and therefore was difficult,
if not impossible, to observe first hand.
如果把if not impossible 拿掉我看得懂
但是插入後 就看不懂了
我会看成 因此则很难,如果非不可能,去作第一手观察
一整个打结了
