标题[文法] 有关more of +名词 的用法

想请教一下板上的前辈，小弟在做指考的题目时，看到有一个句子
By 1900, Carnegie Steel produced more of the metal than all of Great Britain.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
请问一下上面画线的部分是否可以换为 more metals?
上面画线部分的 the metal是否代表集合名词，所以才要用more of ,
若只是要强调A比B多，就只需用more A than B即可?例如
I have more books than bill.
