1. While there were countless bike shops in turn-of-the-century America,
in only one were wings being built as well as wheels.

【疑问】请问为何这里用were而非was呢？ 我自己的解释是,
in only one (shop) (there) were wings being built as well as wheels.
因为shop和there在上一句有出现过，故省略。但是又觉得後面的as well as
接法很怪。一般都是wings as well as wheels，名词+as well as +名词，这
样词性才会整齐。
希望可以得到更容易理解的解释，非常感谢 :)
