Notes: Quentin's role grows
Rookie right fielder ready to start full time for Diamondbacks
By Lindsey Frazier / MLB.com
PHOENIX -- With rumors circulating that the Mets have shown interest in
Diamondbacks right fielder Shawn Green, Arizona manager Bob Melvin said
rookie Carlos Quentin is ready to play at the big-league level full time.
"He wouldn't be here if we didn't think he was ready to be a right fielder,"
Melvin said. "We felt like he was ready last year. Everything that he's shown
would suggest he's ready to play."
Quentin -- who was brought up from Triple-A Tucson on July 20 -- has appeared
in 21 games and made 11 starts, most of which have come in right field, his
natural position.
Melvin said that although his offensive numbers have been impressive -- a
.306 average to go along with four home runs and 17 RBIs -- his defensive
prowess while patrolling the outfield is sometimes overlooked.
"That's all you ever hear about are the offensive numbers, but you don't see
[his defensive numbers when] you look at the stat sheet," Melvin said. "But
then you don't get the full effect of what kind of a player they are until
they're here and you watch them play defense as well. It's an important
factor."
Quentin cleared the bases with his first big-league triple on Saturday,
knocking in three runs in the fourth inning of the D-Backs' 6-3 win over the
Marlins.
On Wednesday, he made a spectacular catch as he climbed the right-field wall
in Spiderman-like fashion and effectively robbed the Giants' Omar Vizquel of
a hit and the tying run.
"Defense wins half the game," Quentin said. "[I want] to be solid and to be
able to be counted on out in the outfield, wherever they put me. I think it's
a plus to take away hits and get outs for the pitcher. Pitchers need every
out they can take. You just want to contribute any way you can."
Quentin said he credits veterans Damion Easley and Tony Clark in part for the
success he has found as a pinch-hitter, a role in which he has contributed
seven RBIs.
These fish can run: The Marlins swiped three bags on Saturday night and
Melvin said that Florida manager Joe Girardi isn't afraid to send runners in
a 2-1 count.
"There's some counts they like to run in," Melvin said. "[Yankees manager]
Joe Torre is big on running 2-1. And so is Girardi, he loves to run 2-1.
You're expecting a fastball, open up a hole. So I think he takes some of what
he learned from Joe over there [when Girardi was the bench coach for the
Yankees]. Plus they have some guys who can run."
Shortstop Hanley Ramirez stole second base twice while center fielder Alfredo
Amezaga stole third.
Back to normal: After being scratched from Saturday's game with a sore right
hand, shortstop Stephen Drew returned to the lineup on Sunday.
"He took a swing and there was a little inflammation in [the top outer] part
of his hand," Melvin said. "He was just having a little trouble gripping the
bat and the ball. I mean he could have gone, but he was feeling it a little
bit out there."
Melvin said that ace Brandon Webb did not experience inflammation in his
right forearm following his five innings of work Saturday night. Webb missed
his last start with tightness in the forearm, which was something that had
been plaguing him not during his starts but a day or two after he pitched.
Down on the farm: Second baseman Andy Green went 1-for-6 with a single in his
first rehabilitation start with Triple-A Tucson on Saturday night. Green was
placed on the disabled list on Aug. 3 with inflammation in his left shoulder.
He is expected to play for Tucson for 20 days, which is the maximum amount of
time allotted for a rehab start, as it will be easier to clear a spot for him
once the rosters expand on Sept. 1.
Craig Counsell (fractured right rib) and Tony Clark (right shoulder
inflammation) are close to making their respective rehab starts, but Melvin
said he has not designated a specific day for either player yet.
"They both could be [sent out] somewhere in this next road trip," Melvin said.
Up next: Arizona takes off on a 10-game, three-city road trip, which begins
Monday in Colorado. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. MST. Right-hander
Claudio Vargas (9-8, 5.30 ERA) will be opposed by southpaw Jeff Francis (9-9,
3.44 ERA).
