原文贴在脸谱讨论区，但那边没什麽人气，所以也在这里贴一下。 喜欢钱德勒的人或许会觉得有趣。 由宋碧云所翻译的《漫长的告别》，译笔极佳，生动感人。 不过，有两处关於专业知识的地方，翻译仍有错误， 希望再版时能够修订，使中文版的《漫长的告别》更臻完美。 1. 在第五章，第46页到47页之间，描写马罗煮咖啡的过程。原文如下： I turned the hot water on and got the coffee-maker down off the shelf. I wet the rod and measured the stuff into the top and that time the water was steaming. I filled the lower half of the dingus and set it on the flame. I set the upper part on top and gave it a twist so it would bind. The coffee maker was almost ready to bubble. I turned the flame low and watched the water rise. It hung a little at the bottom of the glass tube. I turned the flame up just enough to get it over the hump and then turned it low again quickly. I stirred the coffee and covered it. I set my timer for three minutes. Very methodical guy, Marlowe. Nothing must interfere with his coffee technique. Not even a gun in the hand of a desperate character. The coffee was all down and the air rushed in with its usual fuss and the coffee bubbled and then became quiet. I removed the top of the maker and set it on the drainboard in the socket of the cover. I poured two cups and added a slug to his. 这段关於煮咖啡的过程翻得非常不清楚。 按照英文原文，马罗一开始把滚水装入 "lower half of the dingus"， 接下来煮水滚了，上升到"upper part"，最後又 "coffee was all down"， 由此可以非常清楚地推断马罗是用 syphon 壶煮咖啡。 但是，译者似乎对咖啡的知识不够充份，或是对 syphon 壶的术语及冲煮过程不熟悉， 所以译得不尽完善，令懂得咖啡的读者读得莫名奇妙。 马罗用的 syphon 壶（中文多译作「塞风壶」或「虹吸壶」）分为「上壶」、「下壶」两 部份，译文中却用「上半截的量器」和「上半截」来称呼，後面（47页）又改用「顶层」 来称呼上壶。 再来，"I wet the rod and measured the stuff into the top" 这句话被作者译为「沾 湿标尺，量了一些咖啡进顶层」，"rod"被译作「标尺」并不正确，如果这里是指用来量 咖啡粉的量匙，则量匙必须保持乾燥，万不可以「沾湿」，所以我以为这里的 "rod" 是 指冲煮时，搅拌咖啡粉的搅拌棒（在台湾或日本多半用「竹匙」，但身在美国的马罗应该 是用其他材质）。"into the top" 译作「进顶层」让人莫不着头绪，因为不知「顶层」 所谓何也，应该译作「倒入上壶」较佳。 接着，"It hung a little at the bottom of the glass tube."这段译作「在玻璃管底 部停了一会儿」，也颇奇怪。在煮塞风时，下壶的水快沸腾时会上升到上壶，但底部会留 一点点「底水」，原文指得就是在上壶的玻璃管的底部，下壶所残存的这些底水。这些底 水会一直留在下壶，直到冲煮结束，上壶煮好的咖啡再度降回下壶时，才与其混合为一。 所以译作「停了一会儿」颇怪，因为原文的 "a little" 是指一点点底水， 而不是「一会儿」。 而下一句 "get it over the hump" 中的 "hump"，指的是上壶中的咖啡粉， 译者按照 "hump" 的意思译作「圆丘」，固然正确，但在文中，却让人不易领会。 最後，"The coffee was all down and the air rushed in with its usual fuss and the coffee bubbled and then became quiet." 这段，原文写得非常传神，仔细地描写 出马罗把火关掉之後，上壶的咖啡水重新降入下壶的一连串物理反应。因为下壶的气压较 低，所以当咖啡水全部吸入下壶的瞬间，会连带从上壶吸入空气，而发出「嘶」的一长声 ，然後下壶的咖啡会冒出许多白色泡沫，莫约半分钟才平静。但中文版将 "The coffee was all down" 译作「咖啡融进水里」，非常不恰当。因为咖啡粉早就在前一段就和上壶 的水相溶了，此时是咖啡水被下壶吸回，和「融进水里」完全不同。而下一句「空气照例 咻咻涌入」也不适切，无法重现原文对咖啡冲煮过程精密传神的描绘。 关於这段，我建议译者试着了解一下 syphon 的冲煮过程，以译者的深厚功力，一定可以 让译文更为生动精彩。如果译者找不到人示范 syphon 的冲煮过程，我也乐意为译者表演 并仔细解说。 2. 在《漫长的告别》中，马罗多次与泰瑞．蓝诺士到酒吧喝「螺丝起子」，甚至在第三 章（第36页）中，详细描写了「螺丝起子」的调法。中文版的译文是：「他们所谓的『螺 丝起子』只是莱姆汁或柠檬汁加琴酒，再加一点糖或苦料。真正的『螺丝起子』是一半琴 酒加一半罗丝莱姆汁，不加别的。远胜马丁尼。」这让人非常疑惑，因为在调酒界，一般 认为「螺丝起子」（英文就叫 "Screwdriver"）是由伏特加和柳橙汁调成，没有莱姆汁， 没有柠檬汁，也没有琴酒。直到我看了原文，才恍然大悟： What they call a gimlet is just some lime or lemon juice and gin with a dash of sugar and bitters. A real gimlet is half gin and half Rose's Lime Juice and nothing else. It beats martinis hollow. 原来，被译作「螺丝起子」的酒，是 "Gimlet"， 根本不是「螺丝起子」（"Screwdriver"）！ "Gimlet" 原意是「螺丝锥」，是一种手工具，一端是把手，另一端是像螺丝钉的钻头， 用来凿孔钻洞，和螺丝起子的功用完全不同。在 Wikipedia 上可以查到名叫 "Gimlet" 的调酒，确实是以琴酒、伏特加配上莱姆汁调成。 　http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimlet_%28cocktail%29　 所以，虽然 Gimlet 在名称、配方上或许有点近似「螺丝起子」"Screwdriver"，但实际 上却是不同的东西，而且都有明确的定义，并没有模糊的空间。 在原作中，马罗多次在酒吧里点 "Gimlet"，"Gimlet" 已成为马罗和蓝士诺士以及琳达． 洛林互动的重要道具，在书中实有相当重要的意义。因此，我觉得有关 "Gimlet" 的翻译 ，须求真切，不宜鱼目混珠。 --
