ROMERO TAKES LEGAL ACTION AGAINST MIGUEL ANGEL RUIZ Friday 27th May, 2005 -- The Levante official made some grave accusations after Deportivo lost against Mallorca at the Riazor. He stated that Deportivo lost the match intentionally, and that the Romero has actively helped Mallorca to score the first goal. Deportivo denied the accusations, but Romero announced that his lawyers will deal with this matter. THE ACCUSATIONS OF RUIZ Levante's situation became worse after this weekend. They only managed a draw against Valencia, while Mallorca overtook them in the standings with a win at Deportivo. This left the Balearic club in the relegation zone, with one match left to play. Miguel Angel Ruiz reacted violently to this situation, accusing Deportivo and more specifically Romero of letting Mallorca win. According to his conspiracy theory, Depor accepted to lose the game, because of a debt they still have at the island club. Also several of Depor's players have played at Mallorca (Luque, Valeron and Romero), which would explain why they agreed to this. EXPLANATIONS FOR THE LOSS But there are far better explanations for the loss, all more plausible than the one provided by the Levante official. Deportivo was far from reaching any of their objectives, while Mallorca was fighting for survival. The difference in motivation has definitely been a factor in this encounter. Also, the absence of Coloccini in the center of the defense has had a negative impact. The Argentinean has brought much needed security in that zone, and his suspension showed why he is indispensable for the team. Even Levante's own players do not believe in Ruiz' theory. Alberto Rivera stated in an interview that the match was correct and that Romero is a professional player. "I am certain that the match was fair, that Deportivo tried to win. No professional would risk his reputation, especially not one from the Primera Division". "Miguel Angel Ruiz can make such accusations, but I do not share his view. I think all players and referees are professionals", he added. Still, Levante's players continue to support Ruiz "because he has always defended the interests of the team, no matter what". Rivera even defend- ed Ruiz, explaining that "anyone could have made such accusations. We were very mad after the draw against Valencia". THE MATTER WILL BE BROUGHT TO COURT Romero was very touched by the accusations and his lawyers have started the procedure to pursue this problem in a court of law. The left back demands that Ruiz officially retracts his accusations, thus restoring the reputation of Romero, and that he also pays for moral and material damages. The sum would be around half a million euros. Some of the damages are related to the Spanish national team, as it seems that Luis Aragones has doubts about summoning him after the scandal, although he was on the initial list. Meanwhile, Miguel Angel Ruiz has tried to change his position on the matter. He realised the damage he had done to both Deportivo and Levante, and even submit ted his resignation, which was not accepted by Pedro Villarroel, the president of Levante.
