PAT NEVIN: THE EYES HAVE IT
Tue, 20th Feb 2007
If you notice a Chelsea player throw a glance towards Jose Mourinho and
the bench during Wednesday night's game in Porto, our columnist and former
Chelsea star knows why. Pat explains here.
I went along to see my daughter play in a badminton competition last week
and I was very proud when she managed to win it. There were however some
tense moments, particularly during the final.
After a few of the most crucial points she turned around and looked for me
in the crowd. Initially I didn't know why she was doing it. I mean I am
not her coach, at 12 she already knows that particular sport better than I
do and she beats me easily whenever we play.
I do not shout or call out or try to give any advice when she catches my
eye, but she continues to do it all the same. The most I do is look back
at her smiling as if to say, 'just do your best, I believe in you.' And
maybe that is the point.
We all need someone who looks as though they believe in you, particularly
at the most stressful times. Last night I watched young Andy Murray (spot
the gratuitous mention of a Scottish sportsman again) win the tennis final
of the ATP tour event in San Jose and amazingly even he was looking around
at the crucial moments for moral support, this time from his coach Brad
Gilbert.
There is no embarrassment in taking that help, minimal though it may seem,
if it bolsters your belief just by that touch you might need to win.
Footballers of course are no different and although I can't recall looking
to the bench for succour that often, preferring to check the sidelines for
information instead, I know that a great many other players regularly have
a little glance over at the manager.
Different players want to see different things when they see the boss on
the touchline. Some just want a little bit encouragement while others
don't even know they are doing it; they just need a sense of security, a
sense that the boss knows exactly what he is doing, even if one or two of
the players aren't sure now and again.
When Chelsea play these days, there is always a television camera trained
on Jose Mourinho throughout the entirety of the game. The directors
frequently show reruns of his reactions to goals, missed chances or bad
tackles. In fact sometimes I think he gets more close-ups than Naomi
Campbell on a night out.
On Saturday against Norwich, the shots of the boss were brilliant. He
looked relaxed, in control, but more than anything he looked totally
confident and on occasions extremely happy. In particular there was the
moment after Shevchenko scored, when the director cut immediately to the
bench, just in time to witness Jose and Stevie Clarke laughing their heads
off.
Far be it from me to be cynical, but just maybe the cameramen were
expecting a more sour reaction to a goal from the one player who has been
the focal point of the negative press over the past couple of months.
Instead there was delight, happiness and confidence oozing from the bench.
This message would have got through to the players long before that late
goal, because as I have said, they do tend to glance over to the bench now
and then to gauge the feeling there. That game, the four goals, the good
feeling around the ground and the latest clean sheet from the defence, all
made it the perfect preparation for the Porto tie.
Once again however it is that confidence factor that could be all
important. And whether it comes from the players themselves, the support
from the fans or indeed from that belief emanating from the bench during
the game, it is vital to continue to bolster it at this crucial moment in
the season.
Clean sheets also help confidence and if Petr Cech manages to have his
seventh shut out in a row, I fully expect Chelsea to finish the job off
back at the Bridge in two weeks time.
There is also the small matter of the Carling Cup final coming up at the
weekend. I would like to wish the boys the best of luck with that one,
against an improving Arsenal side; it should be a cracker.
I was given the honour of writing the 'pen pics' for the match day
programme for the final, which I was delighted to do…in a rather
unorthodox fashion. I will put those up on this page next week (the
unedited version) for any who didn't manage to get their hands on one of
the actual programmes - they might even give you the odd giggle.
I wasn't giggling at my e-mail inbox this week however, as I was inundated
with hundreds of correct answers to 'Who was the first Chelsea player to
score at the Emirates Stadium?' It was of course Ricardo Carvalho for
Portugal in their friendly match against Brazil a couple of weeks back.
The winner was Fasogbon Timothy from Nigeria and well done to him. There
were complaints that it was too easy again, so here is another effort to
get you thinking.Which player has scored the most hat tricks - three goals
in one match - for Chelsea?Answers as ever to
[email protected] and
the winner will receive the usual prize.
[email protected]。
If you think that is easy, then who is the man who is second to him with
10 hat tricks? No prizes for this part of the answer, but I would be
interested to see how many of you could get this one right. Very few I
suspect.
