Reaction: Mourinho - Misses and decisions decided it, not systems
Saturday, Apr 22, 2006
As the double dream ends, Jose Mourinho has defended the team selection
that began the semi-final defeat, pointing the finger at crucial misses
and crucial decisions as opening the way for a Liverpool win.
While the defence and the forward line chosen has become familiar as
Chelsea stormed back to form during the previous fortnight, the selection
of Paulo Ferreira on the right of a midfield diamond with Michael Essien
at the forward point had surely not been anticipated down Anfield way.
“If I had to pick the two best players in the team, it was Ferreira and
Essien,” was the manager's view as he looked back on the events at Old
Trafford.
“They played very, very good during 90 minutes. I don't think
choosing them was a mistake. I think the biggest mistake in the first-half
was the decision of the free-kick for the goal.”
It was Graham Poll whistling-up a challenge by John Terry for a foot that
looked no higher than his direct opponent that had aggrieved Mourinho.
“When the referee gives such an important decision when 70 metres from
the ball, it doesn't smell good.
“We played exactly the same system as we played in the last three matches.
All his life until he met me in Porto and I made him aright-back, Paulo was
a midfield player. You can criticise all you like the systems and tactics
but I repeat, Paulo and Essien were the two best players in Chelsea.”
Mourinho widened his explanation to the switch at the beginning of the
month from his long-favoured 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 with the current midfield
shape.
“The change was the consequence of a lot of bad results and bad
performances. We lost a couple of games and we drew a couple of games
also. We were not playing well and our wingers were not in-form. When the
wingers are not in-form you cannot play in a 4-3-3.”
In a game that had more ups-and-downs than many a stale semi-final, what
had looked dead and buried soon after the break when Liverpool made it
2-0 was resuscitated by the slip that let in Drogba, who had badly
fluffed a one-v-one chance early in the game. It was then almost leaping
with lifewhen the ball fell to Joe Cole in the final minute.
“In semi-finals, in big matches, you cannot miss big chances and we
missed two, one in the first-half with the score 0-0 and one in the last
minute,” said Mourinho regretfully.
“Last season in the Champions League, Gudjohnsen missed another one in
the last minute with an open goal. In Premierships, one day you are
unlucky, miss chances or make mistakes but in 38 matches it is not a
drama. In knockouts, decisions are crucial and misses are also crucial.
Liverpool's second goal is also a defensive mistake that normally we do
not do.”
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez agreed that Chelsea had been generous to
his side.
“When you play against Chelsea, when you make a mistake normally they
punish you. This game we made maybe three and we concede only one goal.
Normally with the quality of players they have you know that you concede
and this day we had a bit of luck.
“But I think that we deserved to win because we did the right things and
we had a plan. We had an idea that they could play with three players in
front or two and we had two plans. We were working with these two ideas
and when we saw two in front, we knew what to do.”
“In the first-half I think no team was better,” summed up Mourinho.
“In
the beginning of the second-half, they had a good start and after that
they defended the result. We dominated and I think in the last 30 minutes
we deserved to go to extra-time.”
