Rajon Rondo made a mistake.
We should all be able to agree that failing to clear his stay in Los Angeles
while the rest of the Celtics flew to Sacramento — even for a game in which
he was not going to play — was, in retrospect, an error in judgment.
In the grand scheme of NBA transgressions, however, this does not come within
miles of a felony or even misdemeanor. There were, to our knowledge, no
weapons involved, though no one wants to even ponder the horror of what can
happen when birthday candles fall into the wrong hands.
Rondo committed an off-court turnover and he may well be fined, and then it
will be over. And if the Celts luck out in the draft lottery and can add
another player or two and get good next season, the Sacramento Slip will be a
humorous anecdote, if it is recalled at all.
So why the blaring vitriol? Why the flying elbows off the top rope?

The thought occurs that some of it may be because of the way Rondo chooses to
present himself to the public through the media. He is great with kids, and
his NBA Community Assist Award for December speaks for itself. But there are
large segments of Celtics followers who hear him speak only in media huddles,
when he offers up brief and often curt responses. It is a poor representation
of the intelligent and dry-witted being we occasionally see in less recorded
times.
Certainly we have evidence that Rondo can be a bit difficult in team-only
settings, as well, but more of his mates see him in a far different light.
We spoke to Doc Rivers by phone after the Clippers’ shootaround yesterday,
but the former coach chose to keep a respectful distance, feeling it was
improper to comment even on the hidden Rondo. He instead directed us to his
remarks from seasons past. So ...
“I wish you could see the Rondo we see,” Rivers told us early in his last
year here. “But you don’t, and that’s a shame. He’s really good with his
teammates.
“He can be tough at times,” read the quote from Doc, who had some potholes
in his own Rondo relationship, “but he’s a fun guy. I wish he’d show that
side more, but that’s just who he is with you guys.”
Sitting on the sideline before last night’s game, Tommy Heinsohn brought up
an interesting name: Bill Russell.
No one is saying Rondo is in that basketball class, but we are talking about
two rugged individualists who didn’t feel it necessary to argue when they
were misunderstood by some. And Rondo seems to be more at ease with the
public, especially the young public.
He paused for a few pictures and autographs as he made his way to the court
more than an hour before the game. After he’d gone by, a young girl shouted,
“You rock, Rondo.”
As for what he does when the game begins, surely no one can question his
toughness or willingness to play through injury. And with the clear improvement
in his outside shot mechanics and execution this season, we are looking at
the strong possibility he will be even better than the All-Star he’s been
once he rehabs more completely from the torn ACL.
So is it just the cool and sometimes disengaged exterior he effects in group
interviews that bugs people? Is that it?
A few weeks ago, the subject arose in a conversation with Danny Ainge.
“I think it’s a trust thing,” Ainge said. “I have talked to Rajon about
it, and we’ve had a good talk about those types of things, the media. He
understands what I was trying to say, and at the same time the media now is
different. It’s like there’s just so many. So he’s sitting in front of the
media and there’s 30, and there might be 28 good guys, but there’s one guy
that’s looking to take something out of context and to ding him, and that’s
all he sees.
“He’s a hard guy to get to trust you anyway. I mean, he’s a hard guy in
that way. It’s taken a long time for him and I to get a really good
relationship. I mean, we’ve always had a good relationship, but to get that
real trust, it takes him a while. So with the media, there’s the trust
element, and he also might not trust himself or what he might say, say it the
right way. He’s been dinged before.”
Right now, Rondo is getting hammered on the airwaves. And while it may be
best for him to see how last Saturday doesn’t fit well with his plan to
assume leadership of this team, he maintains the ability to deal with it and
emerge a better Celtic on the other side.
Forget how he answers questions; Rajon Rondo’s play and interaction with
teammates will speak much louder.

http://goo.gl/9aFuOG by A. Sherrod Blakely
"Rondo and I had a very good conversation yesterday," Ainge told CSNNE.com in
a phone interview. "I'm satisfied with where things are and as far as I'm
concerned, this whole thing is in the past and we're moving forward."
"First of all, leaders make mistakes," said Ainge who declined to say whether
Rondo was fined. "And I'm not saying Rondo made a mistake in this particular
instance, but leaders in general do make mistakes. All of us learned
something from this, and as I said earlier, we're moving on."
