I had written a script based on A Doll's House [the Henrik Ibsen play in which Ullmann made her 1975 Broadway debut], but the money fell through. Cate kept saying, ``Why can't we do theater together?'' Then she became head of the Sydney Theatre Company. We were in London at the same time, and we got together to talk about plays. We brought up Streetcar, and we got so excited. I went red; she went beautifully pale. We had six weeks' rehearsal in Sydney, and it was an incredible success. Cate gave me this incredible performance, and she also gave me the lust for and understanding of and possibility of being creative in a very, very new way for me. . . . For this, I'm thanking Cate. She never gave up. She gave me this at my age, the knowledge that I can do other things. Q: Any chance that the Doll's House movie might still get made? A: No, but I'd like to make a movie version of Streetcar with Cate.
