Mailbag: What to do about slow start?
Mailbag:
Reporter Matthew Leach answers Cardinals fans' questions
By Matthew Leach / MLB.com
The mailbag can be a challenge at times. Sometimes there's one big issue, and
everybody asks about it -- leaving a shortage of other questions. Sometimes the
questions are good but all over the place. This week, though, with seemingly
all of Cardinal Nation concerned over the state of the team, we have a slew of
very good questions around a theme.
As always, if you have a question, use the this link to submit it -- and please
be sure to include your first name, last initial and hometown. If you send a
regular e-mail, rather than using the form, be certain to use the word
"mailbag" in the subject header -- otherwise your mail may be directed to the
spam folder, or otherwise ignored in an unbecoming manner.
With Regina Spektor's "Begin to Hope" playing, and a cup of Alterra's Kona
Blend coffee by my side, here's the mailbag.
From the best I could tell, John Rodriguez came to Spring Training in great
shape and was productive. Given the Cardinals' current lack of offense,
is there a reason he has not been utilized this season? I thought he had earned
a shot.
-- Wesley H., Vancouver, Wash.
Rodriguez didn't make the team primarily because of concerns about Jim Edmonds.
With Edmonds' health and effectiveness both open questions at the start of the
season, the Cardinals wanted to make sure they were covered in center field.
Thus, So Taguchi and Skip Schumaker were both on the roster -- and in fairness
to Schumaker, he certainly played well enough to earn a spot.
At this point, though, Rodriguez is really struggling in Memphis. After a nice
start, his batting average is down to .176. If anyone were to get called up to
play the outfield, the best choice might well be Ryan Ludwick. He's smoking the
ball down there (.333 average/.378 on-base/.576 slugging). Plus, he's
right-handed, providing another option against lefty pitchers.
None of these guys is the answer, of course. But the club probably could use a
boost, even after Sunday's outburst, and Ludwick looks like the guy right now
who has most earned the call and could help the most.
OK, folks, at what point do we start thinking of dialing 911? In their first 17
games, the Cardinals have scored 50 runs while giving up 65 runs. Please note
that 20 of these runs came in blowouts. The Cardinals have also been held under
three runs 10 times. Last year the Cardinals scored 55 runs in their first
eleven games. I realize that it is the offense that is killing them, but do you
think it is time to consider looking for some arms?
-- Casey H., Elk Grove, Calif.
Might not want to call the emergency services just yet, but it's fair to worry.
Some of the issues that have plagued the Cards will sort themselves out.
Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen will hit. They'll get on base, they'll hit for
power and they'll drive in runs. Some things, though, are less clear. There's
no being sure how much Edmonds will turn it around, for example.
But as for your second question, I don't think it's time to start looking for
some arms, except maybe a power arm for the bullpen. The rotation has been
excellent so far, and I think most of that success is sustainable.
I think it's time to stop protecting Chris Duncan from left-handed pitchers,
especially since no one else in the lineup seems able to hit no matter what
hand the pitcher uses. Do you think manager Tony La Russa is going to start
playing Duncan every day?
-- Tim C., Bloomington, Ind.
I posted something about this on my blog a couple of days ago, but this is also
a good place to answer it. Duncan isn't being shielded from lefties. He's
actually played a lot against left-handed pitchers -- he's fifth on the team in
at-bats against lefties.
The fact is, Duncan isn't going to play every single day. Only Pujols and David
Eckstein are likely to get more than 150 starts on this team; that's just the
way that La Russa likes to use his bench. And if you're going to give Duncan a
break, it makes much more sense to do it with a lefty on the mound rather than
a right-hander.
Look, for example, at the day he sat out in Pittsburgh. He was in a 1-for-12
slump, it was a day game after a night game, and the opposing starter was
left-handed. So he got a break.
So what do you do with a team in the bottom of the ninth, behind 3-2; one out,
two men on, your leadoff man gets hit by a pitch to load the bases, your two
best sluggers come up and you lose, 3-2? Seems as though there is a key
component missing from the Cardinals so far this year. I know it's early going
yet, but really, how can fans not be frustrated?
-- Sandie W., Marshalltown, Iowa
Sure, it's understandable to be frustrated. Players get frustrated, too. But
what do you do with a team that gets in that situation against the Pirates, and
doesn't convert? You don't do anything based on one game.
It's sort of like poker. What you want to do is get your chips in the pot when
you have the best cards. That's what the Cardinals did last Monday against
Pittsburgh. They got all their chips in the middle with two big cards. They
just didn't make the hand. Sometimes it happens. To my eye, the next day was
far worse, when the Cardinals didn't even have those chances.
They just didn't make the
hand(这一句不会翻)。
Any chance Schumaker will start until Juan Encarnacion is healthy?
-- Stephen V., Kirkwood, Mo.
Not really. Schumaker is a nice defensive player, but he hasn't hit enough thus
far to seize the spot. Truthfully, no one has hit well enough to seize the
spot, which is one reason the Cardinals haven't scored more runs. Encarnacion
is no superstar, but when he returns from his rehab assignment he should provide
a boost to the offense.
Should the Cardinals send Anthony Reyes to Memphis?
-- Landon D., Herrin, Ill.
In a word, no. Two reasons. One, Reyes hasn't been great, but it's not as
though he's been awful. He's definitely shown encouraging signs. He's throwing
more strikes, and he has kept the ball in the park.
Two, who would you call up? Blake Hawksworth is developing, but he's not ready
yet. Chris Narveson and Matt Ginter both have ERAs at or above 5.00. There's no
reason to think any of the options would outpitch Reyes.
Chris
Ryan Franklin was a candidate for a starting rotation spot in Spring Training.
He did well, but so did others, so he wound up in the bullpen. With Carpenter
out, why isn't Franklin getting the starts?
-- Maddelyn V., St. Louis
Ryan Franklin
The Cardinals liked Randy Keisler back in Spring Training, but they just didn't
see him as a fit in the bullpen. So they sent him to Memphis to start, with
the idea in the back of the collective mind that he was an option as a sixth
starter.
As for Franklin, he's been a major asset in the bullpen, and the Cards are
still sorting through which right-handers have things together and which ones
are getting it figured out out. Moving him into the rotation in the short term
would create problems in the bullpen that they'd rather not have. So Franklin
stays in the bullpen pitching in eighth-inning situations, and Keisler serves
as the fifth starter.
