TOP CANDIDATE TO SURPRISE: OF Jim Edmonds didn't play in 2009, and he turns 40 in late June, so no one knows what to expect from him. But Edmonds seems driven to get back in the fray, and with all three starting outfielders batting from the right side, the left-handed hitter could wedge his way into at least semi-regular playing time. He is a proven winner. TOP CANDIDATE TO DISAPPOINT: CF Carlos Gomez played his way out of favor in Minnesota by failing to utilize his blazing speed, as he didn't get on base enough. He supposedly was the key to the trade that sent LHP Johan Santana to the Mets, but now he is with another club. Kottaras and Treanor both have been backup catchers in the majors, but Treanor is a non-roster player.
