Is Bayless Bailing on Portland? By: Alex Raskin Last Updated: 12/8/09 7:34 AM ET | 234 times read A former sportswriter for The Oregonian, Dwight Jaynes, has reported on his blog that Blazers guard Jerryd Bayless has requested a trade: Multiple sources in the NBA have told me that Jerryd Bayless seems to be the most available player on Portland's roster. A couple of sources indicated over the weekend that Bayless has asked the team to trade him, because of his lack of playing time. I wouldn't blame him — young players want, and need, to play. And if he wants out, the team should try to accommodate him. There could be some validity to this rumor. Last night at Madison Square Garden Bayless confessed to me that the point guard rotation was a bit, "… Frustrating because I think I'm able and capable of helping this team. "Sometimes I just haven't gotten the opportunity," Bayless added after a loss to the Knicks. "I've been getting the opportunity the last couple of games to help this team. Hopefully we'll continue to win. We lost tonight but hopefully we'll get back on the right track." Bayless has had some success of late. Over the last four games he's seen a decent amount of playing time in all but one. He ended November with a 14-point performance in a loss to Utah. Over his last two games he has scored 13 and 14 points respectively. Specifically, against the Knicks, Bayless was nine of 12 from the field and managed to get to the line seven times. Against Utah last week he shot 11 free throws. So, how will this play out? Well, if Bayless does get traded, don't expect it to be a reactionary move to replace injured center Greg Oden. G.M. Kevin Pritchard told me yesterday that this team doesn't make those types of transactions. "We don't panic anyway," Pritchard said. "What we talk about all the time is calm waters. Can we still have calm waters? As a group, as a coaching staff, as players, during the game, over the course of a game, over the course of a week, over the course of a year, we stay calm waters." Pritchard added that he does not expect a trade to replace Oden anytime soon. Pritchard has also steadfastly insisted that Bayless is part of the team's long-term goals. While Bayless has had trouble unseating Steve Blake and Andre Miller, Pritchard has resisted pulling the trigger on anything. The team also seems to have a role for Bayless at the moment as a combo-guard. Maybe he takes on more of a pure point guard role in the future, but in the meantime he might be able to make more contributions playing next to both shooting guard Brandon Roy and the team's other two point guards. http://tinyurl.com/yahpw49 --
