Description of first PhD scholarship
Responsibilities and tasks
You will focus on developing risk assessments and risk based surveillance systems for insect borne diseases (predominantly mosquito and Culicoides borne infections) in collaboration with international partners. Both zoonotic and veterinary diseases are targeted. The methods will focus on generic process based R0 models. These are models that mimic biological processes (not statistical models). Your aim is to produce quantitative dynamic risk assessments for decision makers (both public sector and
agriculture) based on real time weather and vector abundance data and known biological parameters in primarily Denmark but also in other European countries. The resulting dynamic risk assessments should enable establishment of continuously updated risk based surveillance systems, resource allocation for prevention, planning of control and development of forecast and foresight reports for both agricultural and urban areas. You will work closely with a parallel PhD project in statistical and spatial
modelling of vector borne diseases.
The work will be focused on developing and programming disease transmission models in R and/or SAS, although some seasonal field work will be required for selected transmission parameters. We are looking for a candidate with programming skills, modelling experience, knowledge of quantitative epidemiology/vector biology/veterinary medicine, IT skills, good English and good communication skills. The project will start in autumn 2014.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in the Life Science programme at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide<

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Nils Toft and by Ren? B?dker.
Description of second PhD scholarship
Responsibilities and tasks
You will focus on developing spatial distribution models for insect vectors in Denmark and Europe and spatial models for tick borne diseases in Denmark. Both zoonotic and veterinary diseases are targeted. The methods will be focused on spatial statistical models based on environmental parameters (not biological R0 models) and disease registers. Your two project aims are:
1. to produce national quantitative spatial models of tick borne diseases for decision makers (both public sector and agriculture) based on environmental parameters and remote sensing data
2. to produce both national and European spatial abundance models of insect vectors (mosquitoes and Culicoides) for further use in the Vector Groups risk assessments.
You will work closely with a parallel PhD project in dynamic biological modelling of insect borne diseases and with international partners.
The work will focus on developing and programming novel spatial disease and vector distribution models in GIS, R and specialized software (e.g. random forest algorithms). Some field work may be required. We are looking for candidates with GIS knowledge, programming skills, statistical modelling experience, knowledge of quantitative epidemiology/vector biology/veterinary or human medicine, IT skills, good English and good communication skills. The project will start in autumn 2014.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide<
