標題[問題] the weekend before

請問the weekend before有特定指"上上周末嗎"??還是，是根據所指的那個"the weekend"來判定。
They _______ driven to the beach the weekend before.
答案是had
要怎麼解釋才好呢??(卡在不知the weekend指的是什麼)
