(當然，也希望大家都能收到自己心儀學校的錄取信) Dear XXX, I've seen the YouTube vid where the naïve young woman asks for the letter of support for graduate school in the humanities-and cringed. You probably have as well, and you know the situation. And I imagine every graduate director in the world is sending grim messages much like this, but none of those facts will come as much comfort. I've gotten enough form letters about my 'fine credentials or article, rigorous competition, excellent pool, blah, blah, blah.' It's still a rejection, for which I'm sorry. I can't mitigate bad news, and I know it. Still, it often helps to know something about the inside workings of admissions processes in the midst of a Second Great Depression. It's seldom a matter of one's qualifications alone. Minnesota's financial position is deeply bad, and our future uncertain. We talk about the end of 'stimulus' funds as 'the cliff of 2012.' Virtually every source of support for graduate work is drying up. We have no idea what the shape of Higher Education will be in the future, but we know it will not resemble the past. It's an open question as to whether familiar tenure-track jobs are a thing of the past. And there are far too many graduate programs and PhD's in the Humanities. When we offer admission, it's with trepidation. We've cut our admissions offers again, to secure a class of two or three. We typically identify about 20 candidates who are just stellar. We don't delude ourselves into thinking that we somehow found the true best five; instead, we just close our eyes and pick. And we always reject people whom we really like, often people I know and care about. Don't take this as a simple judgment on you or your work. On behalf of our faculty, many thanks for allowing us to review your work and consider your application. In even these hard times, it's an honor. --
