Between November 14 and 18, seven Canadian writers will travel around the island presenting to students, faculty and public on what makes Canadian literature “Canadian” and how Canada’s changing demographic and social composition are reflected in contemporary literary works. Diverse in age, literary genre, gender, cultural background, these award-winning writers, also academics, have published a large body of work that together reflects a rich cross-section of Canadian literature. The seven writers will travel in groups to nine universities in Taipei, Hualien, Chungli, Nantou, Kaohsiung, Hsinchu giving audiences an inside view of the vitality of Canadian culture today. Through their interactions with Taiwanese audiences, they will also be able to initiate new dialogue around common issues of identity, multiculturalism, history and language. Serving as bookends to the university tour will be two special events. On November 14 evening, the “trans-Scribing Canada: Canadian Writers in Taiwan” tour will be officially launched at Kingstone Bookstore. On November 18, in partnership with National Taiwan University and the Comparative Literature Association, the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei will present, “Taiwan Through Canadian Eyes: Canada Through Your Eyes”, a roundtable discussion between Canadian and Taiwanese writers. Chaired by Taipei City Cultural Director Liao Hsien-hao, discussion will address how evolving nature of identity is reflected in contemporary literature. Canadian writers participating in this roundtable include Roy Miki, Larissa Lai and Wayde Compton. Taiwanese panelists include writer and scholar Hao Yu-hsiang and Canadianist Lin Wenchi.
