They were Shakespeare. I personally find it incredible (and difficult) for any poet to recite his own verses at such speed, unless he is conceited enough to make a serious effort. I can recite a few Shakespeares and Eliots, but none of my own. The scene was trying to depict the competitiveness (and perhaps elitism?) among Cambridge students, which would ultimately affect Plath's relation with Hughes: as wife and husband, as woman and man, as American and English, and of course, as fellow poets. I suppose those recitals did have positive effects on their poetry writing. After all -- those who write, read.
