A florists testimony
-- on the innocence of the thorns of his roses
Dear judge and respected sirs -
A florist I am, and
flowers of various breed I do store.
But to say with honesty, though
every Lily has its glamour and
each Orchid its lure,
none fascinates more than the Rose with thorns.
Ah, but why the thorns?
Thorns that bleed a maiden's fingertip,
a vivid spot of crimson amongst the snow;
Why the thorn that poisons love
when love's most vulnerable to venomous blows?
So they come to ask me,
'Why not gently pluck those thorns, kind florist,
so that squires may flirt
their lady with bouquets of no hurt?'
Wise sirs, hear a poor florist's tale -
for truely did I once sell
to my customers of thornless roses;
yet they eyed the bouquet with doubt
and paid me with curses:
'Thou art a liar, for
these are no roses!
Roses prick, these do not,
and why would I buy a love that is not real?'
For ya see, admirable sirs,
it is the belief that it would bruise
that they call a flower rose, and a rose
is named upon its tempting harm;
a rose is not a rose if it has no traits of a rose,
yet what the traits of a rose must be
are made not by the rose itself.
It is the illusory value
of the rose that rose-seekers seek,
the artificial romance
of which romancers dream.
I plea for the innocence of its sting,
if I could I would have said to it:
'Thy name of rose, Rose,
is given to thee
not by the creator of thy shape,
but by the exploiter of nature, the usurper of love.'
Sworn by whole heart of mine truthfulness,
So ends a florist's testimony.
