另一相關要素是生物放大，指的是環境中潛在的毒物經過食物鏈和食物網後被放大，
層級較低的生物可能只會吸收少量毒素，但被下一層生物大量食入後
便會在其體內累積更大量的毒素。具有放大效應的化學物質包含持久脂溶性有機化合物，
如DDT、PCBs(用於變壓器的油性化學物質)、和部分輻射性同位素(如鍶九十)。
