My name is Dan and I am an experienced teacher who has been teaching in
Taiwan for more than two years. I work very well with all age groups and have
taught first time learners all the way to advanced level students. Before
coming to Taiwan, I lived in a number of different countries, working in
various different fields. I have a lot of experience and I could give you
some valuable exposure to professional and social Western practices.
I have a good sense of humour and my lessons are always a lot of fun. I
like to use learning-based activities to help my students get a richer
experience and understanding of the work we are doing.
I am good at encouraging my students to give their best and I am a
patient teacher. I am strict when it comes to completing classwork and
homework, but I also like to motivate students and get them to want to do
their work happily.
If you'd like to find out if I would be the right teacher for you or your
child, let's schedule an introductory meeting.

EXPERIENCE
ESL Teacher, Big Byte Learning Institute, Taipei, Taiwan (Aug 2010 –
Present)
ESL Teacher, Kojen English Schools, Taipei, Taiwan (2008 - 2010)
Taught English to children of varying age groups levels in a bushiban
setting. Worked with kids at every level, from absolute beginners to junior
high school students at more advanced levels. Prepared in-class handouts,
assigned and marked regular quizzes, and handled final assessment and oral
testing. The wide range of proficiency levels and skill sets of the students
has greatly helped to make me more able to adjust to every conceivable
challenge in the teaching environment.
University Tutor, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand (2005 - 2007)
Engaged in private tutoring for various undergraduate courses across the
social sciences (English, Political Science, Philosophy). I helped students
prepare for assignments and exams, discussing any problems they might have
with the material they were studying. I always tried to keep the sessions
flexible, getting the students to discuss the issues aloud and letting the
student’s questions and troubles guide the course of sessions. All these
skills would translate well to the ESL environment.
Guitar Instructor, Brisbane, Australia (2004 - 2005)
Taught acoustic and electric guitar privately to a number of different
students, of varying ages and skill levels. I tailored each lesson to the
specific needs and demands of my students, making sure the learning material
was determined by their individual tastes in music. I included some basic
theory to complement the practical aspect of teaching, but always making sure
the student’s interest was maintained. In addition to providing useful,
hands-on teaching experience, my musical abilities also give me opportunities
to design lessons around musical themes, making classes more interactive and
diverse.
Living Abroad/Multiculturalism
Throughout my life, I have lived in 9 different countries across 4
continents, and have traveled through about 20 more. I speak two languages
fluently (English and Spanish) and one semi-fluently (French), and was
conversant in two others as a child (Serbo-Croatian and German). This has
prepared me well for dealing with the adjustments of moving to new countries
and adapting to foreign cultures. It has also given me a great perspective
into the learning process, filling me with a greater sense of empathy for the
challenges of ESL students.
