主辦單位:國立台灣大學光電所
授課教師:
1.Professor H. S. Kwok, Center for Display Research,
Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Hong Kong
----- Liquid Crystal on Silicon Micro-displays
We review the technology of silicon (LCOS) reflective microdisplays
optics. This new type of display can have the potential of extremely
high resolution in a small package. This display also leverages the
highly mature CMOS silicon IC technologies. Applications can be in
near eye goggle type displays, as well as in front and rear projection
engines. In this talk, emphasis will be placed on the development of the
appropriate optical elements needed in order to commercialize this displays.
A new approach to the design of color optics for LCOS will also be revealed.
This new design eliminates the cumbersome time sequential color scheme and
enables the NTE LCOS to be extremely low cost and easy to interface.
2.Professor Ian T. Ferguson, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering,
Georgia Institute of Technology, USA
----- Introduction to Solid State Lighting in General Illumination
High-brightness LEDs based on III-Nitrides and AlInGaP has led to the
possibility of revolutionary new approaches for lighting and general
illumination. Efficient UV/Blue solid-state sources fabricated from
III-Nitrides can be coupled to phosphors for white light generation.
The implementation of LEDs, and even lasers, in general lighting applications
will require new lighting paradigms that are now only being considered.
Solid state lighting is the technology of the future for lighting and general
illumination. This presentation will review the historical development of
this technology and then detail some of the technical hurdles to be addressed
to see its ultimate adoption in general illumination.
3.Dr. Guo-Dung Su, Umachines, USA
----- An Introduction to Optical MEMS and Its Application for Displays
This Lecture will provide essential concepts of optical MEMS, also know as
MOEMS (Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems) to those approaching this
field for the first time. The materials presented will be useful to students,
engineers, scientists and managers. Though mathematical formalism will be
provided, the emphasis will be mainly on the fundamental physics behind this
emerging technology. Topics include optical and mechanical CAD simulation
tools, micromachining fabrication processes, governing physics of optical
MEMS and case studies. At the end, we will concentrate on the various types
of displays that make use of MOEMS technology. The advantages and challenges
of MOEMS for displays will be discussed as well.
4.Professor Ghassan E. Jabbour, Optical Sciences Center,
The University of Arizona, USA
----- Principles and Fabrication of Nanothick Molecular and Polymeric
Light-Emitting Devices
In this short course we will discuss the exciting area of organic light
emitting devices (OLEDs- small molecules and polymeric). The focus will
be towards providing a clear and simple lecture that will highlight the
principles of operation and fabrication of OLEDs. Given the time limitation,
we will attempt to cover the following topics: History and Introduction
of organic semiconductors; Basic principles (physical and chemical) of
Organic Semiconductors;
How do OLEDs work? Fluorescence and Phosphorescence in OLEDs;
OLEDs architecture and their operational characteristics;
Fabrication tools: From vacuum to printing; Electrodes and Interfaces;
Encapsulation and moisture barrier technology; Degradation of OLEDs;
Future outlook for OLEDs.
5.Dr. T. Takebe, Sumitomo Electric., Japan
----- Development of ZnSe-based white LEDs
A phosphor-free ZnSe-based high-brightness white LED operating at very
low voltages is demonstrated. The optical output power and operating
voltage of a typical device at a forward current of 20mA is 6.8mW and
2.5V, respectively. The luminous efficacy estimated from these results
is 28lm/W, which exceeds the incandescent lamp. In the talk, basic
properties of ZnSe and related materials, bulk growth of ZnSe substrates,
MBE growth of LED structures on ZnSe substrates, LED fabrication processes.
Fundamental characteristics of the LEDs, etc. will also be presented.
