Aaron Carter was a 14-year-old pop star on the rise--he'd released several hit albums in Europe and in the United States--but he was still widely known as the "baby brother" of the youngest Backstreet Bot, Nick Carter. Lindsay Lohan had just released her film Freaky Friday, and was beginning to attract a lot of attention with her awesome acting talent. The pair met and began dating, and Linday was quite taken with the handsome, blonde Aaron. "I really liked him a lot," she remembers. "It was really tough though, because Aaron was getting started as an actor and a singer, and we kept our relationship kind of secret." It seems like they kept it too much of a secret, because the rela- tionship came as quite a surprise to Hilary Duff, who was also dating Aaron at exactly the same. "I started dating Hilary on my 13th birthday," says Aaron. "But I knew Lindsay first, and I was dating Lindsay. But Lindsay was really possessive, and when I decided I wanted to be with Hilary, I broke it off with Lindsay. It was all really stupid of me, because I really broke Hilary's heart, and I was really in love with her." Although the relationship ended rather quickly, with Aaron and Hilary getting back together for a short time and Lindsay flying solo, the sparks that flew left behind bad feelings and broken heart for both girls. "It's all so childish and immature," says Hilary Duff of the supposed "feud" going on between her and Lindsay. "We both dated Aaron, and she told people that I had stolen her boyfriend. She spread a lot of neative energy around; she left mean messages on my answering machine. It was just ridiculous." The rift between Lindsay and Hilary left both feeling uncomfortable, especially Lindsay, who says, "I hope she doesn't have a problem with me because she shouldn't. Her career is going great and her CDs do so well. There's nothing I can take away from her." But if Lindsay was angry about the situation, it was because she had had very strong feelings for Aaron, and she had been hurt very badly by him. In fact, her feelings were so intense that when he started calling her again in May of 2004, she had every hope that there might be a reunion. But after trying to get their relationship back together, Lindsay and Aaron called it quits for good. "We are still friends, and we were so very close in the past, and you can't keep trying to bring it back again. Now that part of my life is just a memory, and it's very personal to me.
